In seasonal applications, on occasion, steps in maintenance can be forgotten, misremembered or missed entirely. One of the most frequent questions our customer service department is asked is: What chemicals can I use to clean my Sun-Mar toilet?
We love to get this question because the answer is simple: none whatsoever. At least, none in the traditional sense.
With conventional toilets, or low-flush RV toilets, cleaning chemicals are an accepted part of life. Harsh chemicals like anti-freeze are used for winter shut down, and cleaners help break down material in waste tanks and septic systems. These chemicals are designed to help keep conventional toilets clean and odor free, but a Sun-Mar toilet does not require any chemicals for clean, odorless operation.
For all Sun-Mar toilets, the only recommended cleaners are warm water, and our Compost Quick. Traditional cleaners like bleach will harm, if not outright kill, the microbe colony living in the Bio-drum™ and will stop all composting taking place in the drum.
The only materials that should be used with any Sun-Mar toilet are the appropriate bulking material for that unit, Compost Quick and Microbe Mix. Compost Quick is both a liquid form of an active enzyme to help accelerate decomposition in the drum, and a natural cleaner that will help soften any built-up material both on the drum and in the evaporation chamber. Microbe Mix is a group of specially selected microbes that are intended to help promote healthy decomposition in the drum, and should be applied approximately every two weeks that the toilet is in use.
